Caitlin Clark’s much anticipated WNBA debut is set for Tuesday night in Connecticut. The No. 1 pick in the WNBA draft is coming off a record-setting college career at Iowa.

This will be the second sold-out crowd Clark will play in front of in her extremely young WNBA career. Her preseason game in Dallas was sold out, too. More than 13,000 fans also turned up for her only home preseason game.

Wait, did Kate Martin call next?

Sure, Clark’s garnering most of the attention. But it’s former Iowa teammate Kate Martin who sportsbooks believe could get the first championship ring.

Martin and the two-time defending WNBA champion Las Vegas Aces are +100 favorites to threepeat this season, according to BetMGM Sportsbook.

Martin was drafted 18th overall by the Aces in April.

The WNBA is soaring to new heights

The WNBA is working behind the scenes to organize charter flights for its teams — and players are pumped.

The league announced last week its athletes will be flying charter this season.

That means no more commercial security lines, bodyguards in public spaces, cramped legroom or layovers for the professional athletes who have been lobbying for better travel long before Clark’s celebrity brought newfound interest to the league.

Betting odds on Clark to win Rookie of the Year

There is almost no betting value on Clark to win Rookie of the Year.

She was -750 at BetMGM Sportsbook last week. Angel Reese was at +3000.

There is, however, money to be made on a Fever championship. The heavy money on the Fever caused them to go from +2500 to win the championship to +1800.

Caitlin Clark is drawing comparisons to two Birds – Sue and Larry

Already this spring, general manager Lin Dunn has been asked to compare Caitlin Clark to a pair of Birds — Sue, who Dunn drafted No. 1 overall in 2002, and Larry, who turned the NBA’s Boston Celtics into an instant contender in 1979.

Whether Clark’s career takes off like theirs remains to be seen. For now, Dunn wants the Fever’s 22-year-old star rookie to focus on getting acclimated to the pro level, getting in sync with her new teammates and focusing on making the playoffs. The rest can be debated later.

“I see many characteristics between Sue Bird and Caitlin Clark some 20 years later,” Dunn said Wednesday. “When I look at the great guards I’ve seen over how many years now, 28 years, Caitlin has the potential. If she stays healthy, adapts quickly to the physicality of this league, she has the potential to have that kind of career.”

Indianapolis Star sports columnist is absent from Clark’s debut

Indianapolis Star sports columnist Gregg Doyel won’t be covering Clark’s debut, or any of her first WNBA season.

Doyel had an awkward exchange with Clark at her introductory news conference that was criticized as being inappropriate.

He has since apologized.

Some WNBA teams are looking for bigger arenas when Clark’s Fever come to town

WNBA teams have started making moves to capitalize on the popularity of Caitlin Clark.

Some are booking bigger venues for when Clark and the Indiana Fever come to town.

The Las Vegas Aces, Los Angeles Sparks and Washington Mystics have moved their games against the Fever to bigger arenas. The numbers Clark generated in college indicates it’s a smart move. Her debut Tuesday night comes at 10,000-seat Mohegan Sun Arena.

Clark’s preseason is over. Now, the real play begins

Clark had 12 points, eight rebounds and six assists in the Fever’s final preseason game last week.

They beat the Atlanta Dream 83-80, with Clark playing 31 minutes.

The Fever had to open the third deck of their home arena to seat all of the fans who came out to watch. That was after Clark scored 21 in her preseason debut, a 79-76 loss to the Dallas Wings.
