Cable car collapse in Colombia leaves at least 1 dead and 12 injured, officials say

MEDELLIN, Colombia (AP) — At least one person died and 12 others were injured Wednesday when a cable car collapsed in Medellín, Colombia’s second-largest city, officials said.

The manager of the cable car system, Tomás Elejalde, told reporters one person died as a result of the accident, but he did not say whether the individual was a passenger.

Ten people were in the cabin when it fell on the Popular station’s platform, Medellín Mayor Federico Gutiérrez said on the social media platform X.

It was not immediately clear how high was the cable car when it came down, but authorities said it collapsed while approaching the station.

The cable car system, Metro de Medellín, moves people to and from some of the city’s low-income neighborhoods which are informally settled on steep hills.
