The Golden Globes are back Sunday, on a new network and under new management.

It’s been a rocky few years for the awards show that recognizes movie and TV and has long occupied a peculiar place in Hollywood’s awards circuit. Amid a racism scandal, Hollywood boycotted the awards and they didn’t air in 2022. They returned in 2023 – relegated to the ignominy of a Tuesday – but NBC declined to renew the one-year deal. Now they’re looking for another chance, on CBS with another one-year deal.

Hosted by Jo Koy and featuring a slate of notable presenters, this latest iteration promises to bring the irreverence and starriness the audience expects. Whatever happens, The Associated Press is bringing you live coverage from the red carpet, inside the show and backstage in Beverly Hills, California.

It’s unusually chilly and windy, AP’s Beth Harris reports from the red carpet. Temperatures are in the 50s Fahrenheit with gusts of wind rifling the palm trees lining the carpet. Two things haven’t changed, though: It’s sunny, with cloudless skies.

The drinking begins before the celebrities have even hit the International Ballroom. There are two bars at the end of the red carpet. One is handing out specialty cocktails and the other is Moet, one of the show’s sponsors.

Are there any new Golden Globes categories?

Yup, there are two: one for cinematic and box office achievement and one for best performance by a stand-up comic on television.

The first category, which evokes the Oscars’ quickly scuttled attempt to introduce a popular film award, recognizes highly watched films and will be decided “based on creativity, originality and artistry.” The eight nominees are “Barbie,” “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3,” “John Wick: Chapter 4,” “Mission Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1,” “Oppenheimer,” “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” and “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour”

The stand-up nominees are Ricky Gervais for “Armageddon,” Trevor Noah for “Where Was I,” Chris Rock for “Selective Outrage,” Amy Schumer for “Emergency Contact,” Sarah Silverman for “Someone You Love” and Wanda Sykes for “I’m an Entertainer.”

This year, the Globes also expanded the nominees in most categories from five to six.

See Golden Globes fashion through the years

A-list stars like to shine on the red carpet at the Golden Globe Awards, which take place this Sunday, January 7. Over the years some of the most talked-about dresses have been worn by Nicole Kidman, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Julianne Moore and Jennifer Lopez.

A-list stars bring their fashion A-game to the red carpet – and the AP has compiled some of the most fabulous looks of the past 30 years.

What’s going on with the honorary awards?

The Golden Globes typically hands out two tribute awards: the Cecil B. DeMille Award for “outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment” and the Carol Burnett Award for “outstanding contributions to television on or off the screen.”

Neither will be awarded this year, for reasons unclear. The Golden Globes did not respond to requests for comment about the awards’ absence, but a story on the award show’s site indicates it “is not a permanent change, with future awards slated to be given.”

The Cecil B. DeMille Award was first presented in 1952 (to its namesake). Last year, it went to Eddie Murphy. The Carol Burnett Award is much newer, having only been awarded four times – first in 2018, to its namesake, and last year to Ryan Murphy.

What movies have the most nominations?

Winter is here, but “Barbenheimer” season still isn’t over.

Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” has the most nominations, with nine – including best picture musical or comedy, acting nods for Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling and three nominations in the original song category. Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” is up for eight awards, including best picture drama and acting nominations for Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt and Robert Downey Jr.

Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things” and Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” each received seven nominations. In addition to a nomination for her lead role in “Poor Things,” Emma Stone is nominated for the Showtime series “The Curse.”

In the television realm, “Succession” is the top nominee – with nods for Brian Cox, Jeremy Strong, Sarah Snook and Kieran Culkin – followed by “The Bear.”
